Busking For Change 2010

Not only do I admire Josh Pyke’s music, but also his efforts to contribute to society. We often talk about doing things, but not always do we follow through. Josh has earnt my respect and I’m pleased to inform you that Busking For Change is back for its second year.

You may remember us bringing you the announcement last July, as well as photos from the gig. Now, here’s the announcement for Busking for Change 2010.  And here’s the promo video.

Busking for change is a Charity Event started by Josh Pyke, with the first event held last year raising over $11,600 for the ‘Indigenous Literacy Project’ (ILP). The ILP is a partnership between The Australian Book Industry and The Fred Hollows Foundation and aims to help raise urgently needed funds to address the literacy crisis in remote Indigenous communities.

This year Josh is back with a stellar lineup featuring Holly Throsby, Boy and Bear and a DJ set, to raise more greatly needed funds for the ILP. Busking for change will be held on the 27th of August at the Annandale Hotel. (update: Triple J’s The Doctor will be MCing)

By Year 7 schooling, only one in five indigenous children from remote communities can read and write at the accepted minimum standard. This is a massive problem, which can be quantifiably changed by the programs run by the Indigenous Literacy Project. The one thing I can do is put on a charity show to help support the people financially who are out there making the difference, hence Busking For Change,” says Josh.

“To me, a decent level of literacy is really the cornerstone to being able to choose what type of life you want. If you can read and write and communicate with words, your world is opened up to further education, different creative pursuits, or just the escapism of reading a really good book at the end of a hard day at work. Being literate helps you put yourself in the context of the greater world that you live in.”
