Q&A with Jack Carty
Josh Pyke was down in Melbourne a few weeks back working on some demos with producer John Castle. While he wouldn’t give Facebook fans a sneak peek, he did say the demo is called ‘The Beginning and the End of Everything’
In other Pyke related news: Congratulations to Wayne Connolly for his ARIA nomination for Engineer of the Year for his work on JP’s album, Only Sparrows. (And Matt Fell, who plays in Josh’s band was also nominated for Engineer of the Year – Congrats Matt!)
Some of you may be recognise the name Jackson McLaren. Josh produced his first EP, and he’s toured with JP several times. Jackson (and the Triple Threat) have just released a new EP. (Details here)
With only two weeks to go until Josh Pyke’s Only Sparrows tour begins, we thought it was time to introduce you to Jack Carty.
Jack is supporting Josh on this tour and we threw some questions at him which he kindly answered for us…
Five questions with… Jack Carty
Place you call home?
Bellingen, NSW. Even though I live in Sydney I grew up there and like they say, home is where the heart is.
Can you describe your music in a few words?
Thoughtful, melodic songs in a folky style with the odd alt. country twang and some subtle jokes thrown in.
What song of yours would be a good introduction to your music?
(For those who hadn’t heard of you before?)
As far as the new album Break Your Own Heart is concerned I think it would have to be Travelling Shoes. It seems to sum up the whole period the record is about and what we were aiming at when we recorded it.
Or maybe Everything Unhappily, because people seem to smile through that one.
Are there any particular cities you’re looking forward to visiting on the Only Sparrows solo tour?
I have never been to Tasmania before so I am looking forward to the Hobart and Launceston shows in particular. It’s always fun to get up to Byron Bay too…
And do you have a favourite Josh Pyke song?
I have a couple! Forever Song and Sew My Name spring to mind but I think New Years Song is probably my absolute favourite. The line “Well I judge myself by what i give to someone else so i’ll know where i am” gets me every single time.
Make sure you get to the shows early to catch Jack’s set. I’ll leave you with my favourite Jack Carty song:
